Using your computer and an Iridium satellite phone, you can connect to the Internet or a corporate network from virtually anywhere in the world. This allows you to browse the web, send and receive emails and transfer files. Iridium Data Services run on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Mac OSX. Older Operating Systems like Windows 95, 98, ME, NT 4.0 and 2000 are also supported however limited help desk support is available.

You can configure your computer for two different types of data calls, depending on your unique needs, there's Dial-Up Data and Direct Internet Data. In a nutshell, if you only need to connect to the Internet, use Direct Internet Data. But if you need to connect to another computer, a corporate network or to your own personal Internet Service Provider (ISP), go with Dial-Up Data.

Iridium Data Services are designed to allow maximum flexibility. So you can use all the applications you're used to. Just remember, this communications link is not as fast as the connections you're used in the office. Here are tips to optimize your performance and quality of service.

Browsing the Internet

Downloading large images will significantly degrade your Internet experience.

  • Configure your browser to stop downloading images automatically. Why pay for banners, logos, and advertisements you don't need?
  • Browse the Internet through common, fast-loading web portals like www.google.com or www.yahoo.com.

Checking and Sending Emails

Large attachments will really slow you down. You can't control what people send you, but you can follow these tips:

  • Use an IMAP mail server. It allows you to download just header information, so you can choose if you want to download the entire message.
  • Use an email program that lets you specify the maximum message size you can download.
  • Don't copy yourself on your emails. You can configure your email to place a copy of your sent message on your local machine, so you don't have to download your message again the next time you check your email.
  • To reduce the size of your outbound messages, configure your email to exclude original messages in your replies.
